LSU senior tight end Chase Clement is one of seven SEC players to be named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, presented every season to the nation’s top tight end.
There are 33 players in all on the list. Clement’s nomination is the Tigers’ first since Richard Dickson was selected in both 2008 and 2009.
The Thibodeaux native has made 40 appearances and started nine games in his career. He has nine career catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. With the emergence of quarterback Zach Mettenberger as a legitimate passing threat, Clement and the other Tiger tight ends figure to play more of a prominent role in the passing game this year.
Clement was also instrumental in blocking on special teams and on offense, helping the Tiger rushing attack average 202 yards per game last year.
