LSU sophomore punter Brad Wing was named to the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award, an honor presented to the nation’s best punter.
It is LSU’s first such nomination since Chris Jackson was nominated in 2006.
One of the best punters in the nation last year as just a redshirt freshman, Wing was a semifinalist for the award and earned First Team All-American honors from several outlets, including the Associated Press.
The Australian kicker combines a big leg (44.4 yards per punt) with a knack for downing the ball deep in opponents’ territory(13 punts inside the 10-yard line) that makes the Tiger special teams one of the best in the country. His 73-yard punt from his own end zone at Alabama last season completely shifted field position and the momentum of the game in a 9-6 LSU victory.
Wing is one of 25 players named to the initial watch list, including four other punters from the SEC. The number of eligible candidates for the award will grow, however, when nominations are accepted in September.
