BATON ROUGE–LSU cornerback Jalen Mills and defensive end Sam Montgomery have been recognized by the SEC as two of the conference’s top players for their efforts in a 41-3 victory over the Washington Huskies on Saturday.
Mills, a true freshman who made only his second start at cornerback, earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors after collecting seven tackles and his first career interception. Through two games, Mills is third on the team with 11 tackles and has shown signs of being the next great cover corner at LSU.
Montgomery, a 2011 All-American, had four tackles, one sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and a career high three quarterback hurries to earn co-SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors along with Damontre Moore of Texas A&M.
Montgomery and Mills spearheaded an LSU defense that held Washington to just 183 yards of total offense, including a mere 26 on the ground. Washington quarterback Keith Price was sacked four times and was under heavy pressure all night.
